I bought this 67 289 automatic in buckets late in 1984 and restored it to showroom new while living in Fort Worth, Texas. On 22 September, 1985 I was cruising with the top down when I flipped it on Bryant Irvin Road. It had just been opened and had no warning signs about a detour placed after a rise.I never saw because of driving into the sunset. The curb grabbed my wheels, ripped the steering wheel from my hand, slammed my head against it and slipped my foot from the brake to the gas pedal. I shot across the empty road, up an embankment and landed back in the street on the passenger side before it rolled over onto the windshield frame. It held for a brief second of sliding before it collapsed and I lost my grip on the floor shifter. It finally skidded to a stop upside down in the middle of the street, emptying the gas tank.

I was trapped underneath with my seatbelt still on, forearms ground up and a big egg on my forehead. The fuel streaming in was motivational, however, and I
lifted the car by rocking it and crawled out. All my wounds healed with no major damage, but for 20+ years I've been pulling debris from my forearms. I got off easy, since the tops of the seats were shaved down.

One of the responding officers drove the then-hot 1985 LX Mustang pursuit car and almost duplicated my accident. When he parked, his first concern was for whether he had damaged his car! They did love those cars.

Just before the accident I was rocking out to CCR's Bad Moon Rising. I had Radio Shack Minimus 7 box speakers loose-set in the back seat (didn't want to cut the interior quarter panels) and just before they were ejected they were blaring

"Don't come 'round tonight
'Cause you're bound to lose your life..."

Every time I hear that song I have flashbacks.
